I really need to dye more fabric, so I tried Melody's method for the first time. I really like the way the fabric turned out, and it was so easy to do! The color was fairly even, like I wanted it. I don't know if there is an advantage to using more water and adding soda ash later. Does anyone know? I hope to do more tomorrow. When I first started making art quilts, I was sure dyeing my own fabric was not something I was going to like. But I am addicted to it now!

  1. Wow, I never know when anyone is paying attention to my drivel, but I am certainly happy to find that you have had good success. I don't think there is any reason to add soda ash later. I did everything wrong (according to the lengthy directions) when I first started dyeing back in '87. After 20K yards, I think I have found the easiest way.

  3. I really like to start dyeing my own fabrics too. So now my question...is it best to add the soda ash in with the dyes or do you add it in later? Your fabrics are gorgeous and the dye is so even!
