Quilts to bags

I have always loved making things. When we were little, my sister and I made my Mom a tablecloth, napkins and napkins rings for Mother's Day. We used cardboard tubes and covered them with red tissue paper and mod podge for the napkin rings. Since then, I have made cards, scarves, cowls, necklaces,, pj pants and journals-among many others. Recently I have tried to scale down on crafts, and have gotten rid of a lot of the supplies I have  so I don't take too much time away from making quilts. But I still enjoy making bags and purses of all kinds. I have made them out of men's ties, burlap coffee bean bags, linen, canvas and strips of silk. Last week I had a brainstorm as I thought of how I could make a cover for my new sewing machine- I used an old quilt. We'll, not old, just a quilt I was willing to give up. I have several quilts that measure 3'x4' and when cut in half are just the right size to cover a sewing machine. But as I turned it upside down, it makes a perfect bag! And I am on my way with this new idea-I have cut up several old quilts and they are making terrific bags-I should really save 2 for my sewing machines!

I still have straps to add-I'll post picture when they are done!

  1. Well, I don't know why you would want to cut up those quilts, but they look great.

    1. Lisa, I know what you mean! I had a moment of hesitation. But these are quilts from about 6 years ago that I won't use for anything else. I have given some away-as baby quilts, etc. But I think it will be nice to see them as bags, and at least they are out of the closet. I will put up some more pictures when I have a few more done.

  2. I was lying in bed last night thinking about cutting up and recombining some of my textile drawings - som from the past year that for whatever reason don't seem as "successful" as others.

There must be something in the air!

  3. Such a great idea....i have several sample type stuff or leftover QAYG blocks that would make great bags or sewing machine covers (something I've been meaning to do for years.
